Guest post from Ashlei of Kinks are the New Pink
It’s been a long time since my prom going days, but I still remember the excitement of getting dressed up for one of the biggest nights of my high school years. From the glamorous dresses, to the chic makeup — and of course the magical hairstyles!
I was still relaxing my hair during high school so I unfortunately didn’t get to rock a natural ‘do. For those of you who are natural and are heading to prom this year, take this as an opportunity to really let your curls shine — I know I would have! To give you some hairspiration here are 3 ideas for styling your natural hair for prom:
Add some bohemian flair to your prom style with this twisted crown hairstyle. A fun style that lets your curls be free but not in your face. To create, simply section off the front of your hair and either flat twist or braid across your crown. If you want a more defined twist/braid, just add the cream or gel of your choice to smooth it out. Then, because it’s prom, add on some fun embellishments! Try an oversized flower, glittery pin, or sparkly barrette – and don’t forget those statement earrings!
This is a fun and funky hair trend going around as it allows you to get a little creative with accessorizing your hair. To create, flip your hair to one side of your head and pin, then take bobby pins in a contrasting color to your hair and pin them smooth side up. You can create patterns as simple as putting the pins side by side or get inventive and create something completely unique. This style makes me think of a grecian goddess, perfect inspiration for a magical prom night.
You can never go wrong with a classic updo, and I’m proud to say this is a very simple DIY style you can wear for prom or any special occasion. You essentially section your hair into 3 parts – front, middle, and back – while creating two puffs for the middle and back of your hair and a pompadour in the front. Depending on the length of your hair you can make the pompadour as exaggerated as you like, and while I like seeing the texture of my hair, if you want a more sleek look for the puffs use styling gel to smooth it out.
All these styles were done on freshly washed and stretched hair by leaving twists in over night.
However you end up styling your hair for prom make sure to test it out and practice a few times before your big night. There’s nothing worse than deciding to do a certain hairstyle and realizing the day of it may not work as you hoped, so being prepared will help eliminate any stress and ensure you’ll have the best night ever!
