Tell us how your natural hair journey began and why?
My natural hair journey began in 2010 because I was tired of getting my hair trimmed significantly each time I went to the salon. My best friend and I took on the challenge together and got our last relaxer May 2010 and have been loving our natural curls ever since. I’ve now been natural for four strong years, and my hair is now longer than my childhood years.
What is your hair care regimen?
My hair care regimen is pretty simple in that I wash my hair with shampoo and condition once a month and condition and deep condition my hair three times a month. Therefore, I’m only physically going through the full hair process of washing/conditioning, deep conditioning, and twisting my hair four times a month. This works best for my lifestyle because I’m busy, I workout a ton, and I like to keep it simple in protective styles so my hair will continue to grow. On a weekly basis I gradually untwist my hair. By the end of the week I’m wearing my full blown big hair twist out. For a step by step guide go you check out my hair care playlist.
My all-time favorite twisting cream is As I Am Twist Defining Cream. I’ve used this product the longest, and as soon as I caught hold of the company As I Am Naturally I was immediately hooked to their twisting cream. My other favorite products are: Aubrey Protein Conditioner, Aubrey Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner, Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque, and Taliah Waajid Detangler, Taliah Waajid Herbal Conditioner, and Taliah Waajid Herbal Conditioner Black Conditioner.
We love how motivated you are about being fit, what prompted that journey?
I’ve always been an athlete and have always been very driven and determined to stay fit. During my soccer career I had numerous surgeries which encourages me to stay fit and active. In addition to the HangTight with MarC journey I’m on now I simply started because people would come and ask, “ MarC how do you stay in such good shape?”, and “MarC what do you eat to stay lean?” All of that combined is how I got started, by wanting to help others get fit and eat healthy by providing free resources so persons won’t have an excuse of why they can’t get in shape.
What are some tips you’d like to share for those wanting to begin a fitness routine?
Anyone new to start a fitness routine I would of course tell them to visit my website and click on the “New? Get Started Button”. I encourage all persons to start walking then running just to get moving. Then, start off with the HangTight with MarC warm up and cool down routine. These are possibly the two most important elements of a workout that many persons miss. You can’t even begin to have the best workout of your life if you don’t warm up to get your body ready for an exercise session. The HangTight with MarC warm up and cool down also give persons of taste of the exercises and style of workouts I give. You can then start doing my workouts, using the beginner variations then work your way up to advanced.
Can you point us to some beginners exercises that anyone could do?
All beginners should work on the foundations of any good workout which include, pushups, situps, squats, lunges, and working their way up to hold a forearm plank.
What motivates you daily to get up and workout?
I’m motivated daily to get up and workout simply because it’s the only way I function and feel and look my best. If I don’t workout it’s either because I’m on vacation or giving my body time to recover. After a good workout, taking a warm shower, and sitting down to eat breakfast is one of the best experiences one can imagine! Oh, and did I mention I love working out to my House Music? I use the music I listen to take my workouts to an entirely different level.
What are some challenges if any that you face keeping a strict exercise regimen and maintaining your natural hair?
I don’t have any challenges due to my strict exercise regimen and maintaining my natural hair. When I first went natural my hair was really short and I didn’t feel comfortable going into the gym with my hair in big twist, due to my big re-twisting at night, so I wore a type of hat covering. Now, however, it’s long enough that I put it in a ponytail with a headband and go
Can you give us some pointers on keeping our hair clean and healthy, while still being physically fit?
Keep your hair up off your neck and wear a headband. If you workout in a gym consider wearing a hat or some type of covering, incase you’re doing exercises that require you to put your head/hair on a public exercise mat full of germs.
What inspired you to start a youtube channel?
As mentioned above I started my YouTube channel because everyone kept asking me how I stay in shape and what I eat. I thought to myself, YouTube, what not a better place to start. Also, back when I started, the presence of African American female trainers on the web was very small, which motivated me to start a channel of my own and get the community shape.
What can we look forward to from HangTight with MarC (from your website and youtube channel)
You can look forward to more workout series with brand new exercises and workouts. Monthly lifestyle and fitness challenges, that truly takes you out of your comfort zone to change your habits and get stronger. Also, look for more collaborations with other fitness and health enthusiast on the web.
