We have finally made it out alive from this terrible winter rut! No more heavy coats, scarfs or gloves. But most importantly, NO MORE SNOW! Hello sunshine and hello summer! If you can’t tell by now, I’m totally overjoyed that the weather has changed and so has my wardrobe. But with this change in season comes a change in routine.
Just as you would unpack your lightweight jackets, shorts, and flowing sun dresses the same can be applied to your hair care products. So pack up those heavy butters, oils, and stylers. It’s the perfect time of year to experiment with some lighter products.
Keeping your hair hydrated is key regardless of the season. However, for the Summer I suggest light water based moisturizers to keep your tresses well nourished.
Here are my top 3 favorite moisturizers for the summer:
Shea Moisture Curl and Style Milk
I first discovered this product in the very beginning of my transitioning journey. Their curl enhancing smoothie was much too heavy for my hair at the time and I was looking for a lighter option. Who knew it would become one of my favorite summer staples.
The style milk is said to detangle, condition, and control curls while restoring body and shine. I love using this product during my mid week detangling/moisturizing sessions. About 3-4 days after washing my hair it is usually dry, the style has fizzled out, and there are tangles galore. But at this point it is too early in the week to wash my hair. Instead I opt for a revamp to give the hair some life and much needed moisture.
I divide my hair into four sections and use about a dime to a quarter size amount of the milk on each section. Starting from the ends I detangle, braid, and move on to the next section until my entire head is completed. My hair is not only detangled but moisturized and ready to take on a new style. I feel this product is perfect for those days when you hair is in need of a moisture boost. Its light enough that it wont leave your tresses feeling weighed down and greasy but heavy enough that even the thirstiest curls feel quenched.
You can find this product on Amazon.com or at a Target near you for $9.99
Oyin Juices & Berries
I love, love, LOVE this product. To me it is the quintessential summer staple. Light, moisturizing, and smells like a tropical island. This product is great as a refresher spray or a mid day moisturizer. I apply it every other day/couple of days to my hair as soon as I wake up in the morning. I’ve found that as a transitioner it is difficult to apply moisturizers to my hair mid week without completely destroying my hairstyle. The spray allows me to give my hair the moisture it needs without wrecking my “doo”.
Oyin Juices & Berries can be purchased on Amazon.com or on the Oyin Handmade website.
Karen’s Body Beautiful Sweet Ambrosia Leave In
Not only has this become my new favorite leave in but it is also my all time favorite light weight moisturizer. Whenever I use this product, it leaves my hair feeling luscious, soft, but never greasy. Not to mention I love that the smell is amazing but not over powering. Karen’s Body Beautiful Sweet Ambrosia Leave In is said to detangle and define your tresses. It’s also great for dry and super thick hair.
I’m definitely not dainty when it comes application. I squeeze out a ton of product and slather it on to my hair (I know not that best technic but when you are running late to work it does the trick). And even after doing all of that my hair still retains its bounce and fluff. This is incredibly important to me because I have low porosity hair and it doesn’t easily absorb things. Product often sits on top of my hair strand never getting the chance to work its magic. As soon as I realized how quickly my hair drank this leave in up I was hooked.
Karen’s Body Beautiful is available on Amazon.com, the Karen’s Body Beautiful website or Target for about $16
