Growing up, I had friends that washed their hair every morning or every other day. By comparison, my wash days were rare – with my mom washing my hair bi-weekly or once a month if I had braids in.
When I returned to natural after ditching my relaxer, one of the first things I had to unlearn about caring for my hair was that water is “bad.”
I soon discovered that was the farthest thing from the truth.
Not only does our hair love water – it needs it. Heaps of it. Growing healthy natural hair requires you to create a regular wash routine for your hair. No more going 3 to 6 weeks without your hair touching water!
In this post, I’m going to share with you how you can use YouTube to help you craft a wash day routine that fits the needs of your hair, plus a few supplies that’ll really come in handy on wash day.
Use YouTube as a Resource and Not a Blueprint
As a new natural it’s very tempting to hop on YouTube and copy+paste the wash day routine of a YouTuber that you think has hair like yours. Trust me, I know. I did it – and I learned firsthand that in most cases, you can’t just directly copy someone else’s approach. Even though it may look like a match on camera, the reality is that no two heads of hair are exactly the same. Our hair is like fingerprints – we’re all out here with a unique set. As such, the likelihood that your wash day routine will be identical to someone else’s routine is slim to none. But – this doesn’t mean YouTube can’t help you put the pieces together. The key? Use YouTube as a resource and not the blueprint.
What do I mean by that? Don’t watch a “Wash Day” video and then follow the steps verbatim. Instead, watch YouTube videos to familiarize yourself with the methods and products naturals use. Once you watch enough videos, you’ll have a good sense of what steps you need to include in your wash day routine. From there, pick out some products to start with – and then modify the products you use according to how your hair responds.
The Must-Do Steps for Wash Day
As you do your research to put together a wash day routine that works for you, keep in mind that you’re going to want to incorporate these five core steps:
You can change the order or add a step if needed – but generally speaking, these five steps are always a part of wash day.
I’m not going to make any product recommendations for the reasons shared above, but I can share with you the products and supplies I use for wash day.

We’ve discussed how to use YouTube, the essential elements of wash day, the best supplies to have on hand, and you’ve seen the products that I use. I’m going to finish up by sharing this wash day routine from Jasmine Rose. My routine is pretty similar, with the exception of different products. What I like about her video is she has a thorough routine – she cleans out build up, she massages her scalp, rinses with cold water instead of hot, and she cleans her hair in sections. For men and women with kinky hair (or locs!) this is a great starter routine to build from.
I hope you enjoyed these tips on how to craft your OWN wash day routine.
Cheers to healthy hair and a healthy scalp!
