Every natural out there has done it. It’s midnight and instead of being in bed, you’re stuck in front of a mirror twisting your hair for a twist-out only to be eventually tucked away under a bonnet for the next day’s unveiling.
We’ve seen the “natural girls be like” memes on social media. Naturals tucked in bed with bonnets and curlers in tow. On many nights, we go to bed with our hair in plaits in hopes of achieving the ultimate head of curls by the next morning.
It’s not a secret that our beloved twist-outs are a staple style and involve hard work.
After numerous attempts, twist-outs become a process of figuring out a technique that works for your own individual taste. Some like their tresses fluffy. Some like their curls elongated.
Felicia, our natural sister and fellow blogger, likes her twist-outs super curly and we have to admit that we’re super hooked on her results. We give Felicia “two snaps” and a “yaaaaaas” for her curly twist-out method.
As much as we are obsessed about 29-year old Felicia Mesadieu’s curly twist-out, so is she about natural hair. At She’s Naturally Obsessed, Felicia shares her natural hair journey alongside style, beauty and life advice through blogging.
“I’m trying too figure out a way to be this fabulous 30 year old,” Felicia said. “My blog is my journey to a fabulous life.”
At She’s Naturally Obsessed, there’s a little something for everyone. While witnessing Felicia’s journey, naturals can grab a few hair tips along the way like Felicia’s tutorial on curly twist outs inspired by YouTube guru Donedo.
Felicia blessed 4c Hair Chick with some awesome beauty advice for curly twist-out fans. Check out her tips below.
1. “Be patient.”
According to Felicia, creating a curly twist-out is a tedious process. “It’s not a process that takes 10-15 minutes,” Felicia said. “You need to set a block time to do your hair so that you’re not rushing and to achieve the best results.”
2.”Use a wide tooth comb.”
Resist using combs with smaller teeth on 4c texture hair. Instead, opt for wide tooth combs to part hair, minimize breakage and ease the detangling process. Also, don’t forget to use a pick when fluffing out hair for voluminous curls during take down.
3. “Don’t overuse products.”
In Felicia method, she uses Ecostyler Gel, shea butter, coconut oil and argan oil. Use these products minimally. If you don’t, Felicia states that “you’ll see the build up in your hair.” Although, it’s optional to do twist-outs on dirty hair, Felicia prefers clean hair for her twist-outs.
4. “Allot time for hair to set”
Waiting for your twist-out to set is the biggest step that all naturalistas must adhere to. Felecia advises to take at least 2-4 hours for your hair to set and to achieve a perfect curl. Required setting time will also vary depending on whether your hair is damp or dry. Regardless of moisture levels, Felicia’s motto for this setting time is “the longer, the better.”
