I remember it like yesterday. It was the year 2009. I was a senior in high school and I was staying up way past my bedtime, browsing the internet as usual. And there you were. Maybe somebody shared your video on Facebook (I take that back, I don’t think sharing was available then) or maybe I stumbled upon it on Google. I’m not quite sure how I found you, I just know you were on my screen talking about your hair.

After watched both parts of your curly fro video thinking to myself “Hey, my hair kinda looks like that right now. I think I’m gonna try this!”, the tutorials finished and I grabbed a comb heading straight into my bathroom. As they say, the rest was history.
See, my hair had been natural all my life, but I’ve only ever known straight hair. I was always wash, blow dry, press, repeat. I didn’t know I had options until you taught me. You taught me how to do a curly fro; a style I rocked faithfully throughout senior year of high school and freshman year of college. You taught me the “undo” from your first haul video; another style I rocked faithfully. You taught me about makeup. I still haven’t deviated from the way you taught me how to apply my blush and foundation!
Most importantly, you introduced me to a whole new world. One I was largely unfamiliar with even though I had natural hair all my life. I am now in love with that world. You showed me that it was okay to wear my ‘fro AND that I’d look good doing it! You showed me that I was not alone, there was (and still is) a community out there that is willing to help me along this journey. You introduced me to bloggers and vloggers who have taught me a wealth of knowledge about my hair and have inspired me to do the same. I’m a natural hair enthusiast now!!!!
Thank you Heather Nicole. Though I don’t know where you are now or what you are doing, I will always remember that night in 2009.
to Ms. Heather Nicole with love,
