Seriously – where did 2017 go?! Summer fashion staples are on clearance, and stores everywhere are decked out with Halloween decorations. Not to mention, folks are already whispering about Black Friday.
Basically, it’s protective styling season again.
This time around, we’re prepping for braids, faux locs, wigs, and updos with the newest prestige (aka fancy and upscale) natural hair care brand – FORM Beauty.
FORM is a family of products created by Walker & Co. (you know them from Bevel) designed to meet the specific hair care needs of women of color while simplifying the process. Basically, FORM wants you to chill on all the wash day drama, keep it simple, and just enjoy the ride.
We put FORM Beauty to the test, using each product to prepare for protective styling season. Here’s what we did:
The first step in preparation for protective styling is clean hair and scalp. A clean scalp means your protective style can remain installed without fear of dryness and flaking (or other questionable scalp drama). And you’ll want to get shampoo not just on your scalp, but on your strands too. Product and oil/butter build up on strands can prevent the necessary moisture from penetrating the hair to prevent breakage and dryness.
To prep the scalp and hair for protective styling, twist hair into 4-6 sections. Section by section, apply your shampoo to the scalp, massaging and working the product down to the ends of the hair. Repeat until all sections have been shampooed and then rinse.
FORM offers two conditioning options, but we used Hydrate for intense moisture and slip. Mega moisture is necessary for protective styling to prevent breakage and keep hair from becoming brittle because let’s face it – damaged hair after protective styling defeats the purpose of protective styling. #tweetthat
Working again in sections, apply a generous amount of Hydrate and use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to detangle. Once all hair is covered in product, sit under a steamer for added moisture and penetration of nourishing ingredients for 10-15 minutes. Alternatively, cover the hair with a plastic cap and sit under a hooded dryer for the same length of time or until Hydrate has completely penetrated the hair.
Multitask & Define
Once the hair has been cleansed and conditioned, it’s time to prime the hair for protective styling. Multitask 3-in-1 Leave-In Lotion is lightweight and versatile leave-in that hydrates the strands thoroughly. It works as a leave-in conditioner, daily moisturizer, and style refresher that hydrates and revives strands without product build-up.
In this case, we’re using Multitask as a leave-in primer for protective styling because layering in moisture wards off breakage and dryness while improving the longevity of the protective style. When paired with Define Elongating Curl Crème, this super moisturizing duo leaves hair soft, smooth, and ready for the protective styling long haul. Are both necessary? Yes, yes, YES. A successful protective style means putting in the proper work to maximize hair health before installation.
Working again in sections, spray Multitask generously from root to ends, combing with fingers or a wide tooth comb to work product through. Follow up with a dime, nickel or quarter-sized amount of Define (depending on the size of your sections, hair density, and length), and work the crème in from roots to ends, also followed with finger or wide tooth combing to distribute product evenly.
Twist loosely and repeat until all sections are covered.
Your end styling results will dictate how Sculpt Defining Curl Gel is used. For feed-in, Fulani-inspired, or box braids, Sculpt can be used near the roots for gripping and laying hair for clean parts.
For updos, use Sculpt and a satin scarf to lay edges without dryness or flaking.
If you’re going to be rocking a textured wig, full install, or clip-ins, use Sculpt to help define the added hair or blend textures between leave-out and extensions.
