Black women are:
And so it’s funny that even though we are all these things, so often we are represented as one thing. Many observers, media outlets, and storytellers love to document and tell our stories with filters. They employ filters of whiteness, safety, political correctness, anger, jealousy, hypersexuality, and beauty standards all to shape us into a construct that makes them comfortable.
The attacks on our beauty and sexuality, in particular, create tension, doubt, confidence issues, and self-esteem deficiencies. And so in 2013, 4cHairChick was created to counter the third person narratives about black women. This platform was created for black women by black women to highlight underrepresented beauty and to shift the connotation around kinky, nappy, and coarse hair textures.
Over the years by virtue of our audience, our work has extended beyond hair into discourse about self-love, but we keep our mission to change how those with type 4 hair are characterized at the forefront of all of our projects. It is with this in mind that we birthed a new project called The Journey a special tribute compilation summarizing the self-love journey many 4c Hair Chicks have experienced.
The Journey eZine is a visual celebration of self-love, inspired by you, the 4cHairChicks community. Your beautiful letters, deeply personal e-mails (thanks for trusting us), and thought-provoking messages course through the veins of The Journey. As champions of underrepresented beauty, this eZine represents some of our most transformative steps on the path to self-love.
And you know best, 4cHairChick, that the journey is ongoing. It’s a daily walk, and not in a straight line. Some days will feel like effortless steps forward, while other days you’re pressing through harder than you ever have before. And sometimes, in spite of your best efforts, you take a step or two back.
But still, you are triumphant.
As often as you’d like, revisit the pages of The Journey for inspiration, support, and to celebrate how far you’ve come. Download your copy of the eZine here.
We’d love to know your self-love story. Share what’s on your heart at [email protected] or tweet us @4chairchicks with the hashtag #4cHCTheJourney.
